“Recent studies reveal that Internet addiction is associated with impaired brain structure and function, which affects planning, prioritizing, organizing, and impulse control,” according to a February 2016 telecast of “Dr. Oz” on Internet addiction.
Mehmet Oz, M.D., the talk show host and cardiothoracic surgeon, said, “Other studies showed shrinkage in the area known as the insula, which regulates the capacity to develop empathy and compassion for others.”
Dr. Oz added, “This addiction affects the way we handle our emotions, it affects the way we make decisions and affects your ability to focus at all!”

Jews can secure eternal salvation without converting to Christianity, senior Catholic theologians say in a report published yesterday in the latest refinement of their stance on a vexed theological issue.
Addressing a question that has long blighted relations between the faiths, the report also unequivocally says the church should not actively seek to convert Jews, echoing the stance outlined by former Pope Benedict XVI in 2011.
The report, drawn up by the church’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, goes further than Benedict, however, in effectively affirming that Jews can be saved independently of Christ.

Television, movies and graphic novels flood the market with possibilities of a “zombie outbreak,” causing otherwise rational people to prepare for a vicious, fictitious battle against the “living dead.”
Today there are actual zombie survival classes and even a zombie news app that notifies users of an impending zombie invasion! Based on what?
Zika transfusion
Brazilian health authorities confirmed on Thursday a case of transmission of Zika through a transfusion of blood from a donor who had been infected with the mosquito-borne virus that is spreading rapidly through the Americas.
The health department of Campinas, an industrial city near Sao Paulo, said a man with gunshot wounds became infected with Zika after multiple blood transfusions in April 2015. Officials said they determined that one of the people whose donated blood was used in the transfusion had been infected with Zika.
Zika is usually contracted via mosquito bites, so transmission of the illness through blood transfusions adds another concern to efforts to contain the outbreak. Some countries have tightened procedures for blood donations, to protect blood supplies.

No one can make you serve customers well.....that's because great service is a choice. Harvey Mackay, tells a wonderful story about a cab driver that proved this point.
He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey.

For people whose religious beliefs or personal preference makes them unable to have a blood transfusion, even the simplest surgery can be a problem.
That's because doctors need to have blood on hand for an emergency during many procedures. Others types of operations, like heart surgery, require that patients get extra blood to replenish their own.
The Jehovah's Witness religion prohibits its followers from getting a blood transfusion, believing that both the Old and New Testaments forbid the practice.
Others worry about transmission of disease through blood transfusion, although screening and testing have reduced that risk.
Some hospitals have created special programs to cater to the needs of people who want to avoid blood transfusion. Englewood Hospital in Bergen County, N.J., has an Institute for Patient Blood Management and Bloodless Medicine and Surgery.
Putnam Hospital Center also has a Blood Management for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program, which serves about 600 patients annually. The hospital will hold an open house on Saturday for patients interested in learning more.
Dr. Rolando Rojas, is the medical director of blood management for bloodless medicine and surgery program at Putnam Hospital. Rojas, himself a Jehovah's Witness, brought the program to the hospital when he joined four years ago after many years of treating other members of the faith.
He discusses bloodless surgery with The Journal News.
Why do people want bloodless medicine and how often do you get this request?
It's mainly for Jehovah's Witnesses because of their religious beliefs. But there are also a lot of people who don't want a stranger's blood. They don't want the risk of getting a disease like hepatitis C.
Word has gotten around that we have a bloodless program and a lot of people come to Putnam Hospital so they can have bloodless surgery.
Tell us how you manage to do surgery without blood transfusions?
There are several ways. For Witnesses, we use a machine called a cell saver. This collects blood to filter that can be reused and circulated back to the patient during surgery. Witnesses see it as a continuation of their circulatory system. It is allowable.
For people who do not have religious objections, we can do pre-surgery planning. We can give injections that stimulate production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. We can also collect a person's blood before surgery and keep it to use during surgery.
There are also methods we can use during surgery to reduce bleeding, like a scalpel that cauterizes while it cuts.
Is it safe?
It is safer than regular surgery. It avoids a lot of bleeding and it avoids the risk for the patient, like hepatitis C. It has been shown that patients who do not accept blood do much better post-operatively than patients who have blood.

Lionfish invasion?

phones in our vest pockets
A week or so ago a schools instructor sent me a copy of a pages from a 1922 Golden Age (Awake!) which said we would have phones in our vest pockets in the future. Several folks have since sent me the same thing and you may well have seen it. I was just sent another one and thought I would fill in a gap since many of you cannot imagine life before mobiles.
Many of you also never heard of Flash Gordon but he was the super hero of a comic strip about future of space travel etc. Interesting that its writer began the series in 1934. Twelve years after it appeared in our magazine. Then I looked back to early mobile research and found this. Do we have Jehovah’s guidance or what?
